Dear MPACUK,
I applaud the attractive, intelligent looking young women who appeared in front of the Sudanese Embassy with placards - "Not in our name" - . Were it possible to send attachments with this e-mail I would send you a photograph of me with wearing medals and RAF wings at anti-war protests before the illegal war against Iraq – I held a placard - "Not in MY name" -.
Sadly today, I view Islam in a different light; for it is not a modern, enlightened face of Islam that appears to dominate the scene but one of violence in many countries around the globe: a hatred towards those who do not hold the perpetrators fundamentalist beliefs. This is a very, very dangerous situation and I foresee the early seeds of a future world war unless wiser, more powerful, moderate views prevail.
I was in Germany during the Second Word War and am aware of the acts of barbarism perpetrated by a Western nation. I am also well aware of the horrific acts committed by another Western nation against – supposed terrorists -. This can never be excused, but nor can the acts of barbarism perpetrated in some Islamic countries against women for acts involving sex over which they had little control, and yet the men who perpetrated such acts against them are freed. Readers have left 7 comments.

im fed up with this type of poison pen letter, the fact is that islam has been deliberately misrepresented not only by the media and government but also by regimes who are more than likely to have been protected by western interests.
maybe the west should put its own house in order and understand how it values women and how it degrades women and under utilises the 'resource'. the arrogance of the writer is astonishing, what is even more disheartening is that educated people can buy into the distortions that are created by vested interests that wish to deny islam and muslims an equal footing in the west. why worry about the place of women when there is no place for muslims in the uk or usa voicing their concerns of the foreign policies of their governments .

I hope we see many more examples of Muslims and non-Muslims working together against injustice - just like we saw when the British government launched its illegal war on Iraq.

Of course you won’t find any Muslim poster here who will do other than applaud you. Many of us Muslims agree with you entirely, and it is great that MPAC is taking so many issues to the forefront. Their approach is so much more constructive than ‘Ed’ Husein’s, who constantly harps on about ‘Islamists’ (one notices that ‘Ed’ talks about the need for Muslims to change, but he talks only to the non-Muslim media – if he really meant what he says he ought to be doing what MPAC does, which is to get into the heart of the Muslim community and to reform from within). Essential Islam is dynamic, and not sterile. If Islam doesn’t set you free then it isn’t Islam that you’re practising! The treatment of women within so-called Islamic societies is more than a matter just of shame: it is cruelty. It has no basis in Islam (not being contained in any of the Five Pillars – Faith, Prayer, Charity, Fasting and Pilgrimage), but is rooted in the conflict-ridden Middle East stretching back centuries, which painted men as defenders and women as victims/booty. It is cultural and NOT religious. Ironically, it is non-Muslims such as yourself that can help Muslims to get back to the true nature of Islam, and supporting MPAC is a step in the right direction. (PS: we need more Muslims to join the armed forces/police/fire service/prison service/ambulance service as well as play a more active part in the voluntary sector)

I don't think that this article received as much comment as it deserved. When I read it carefully I realised here was a non-Muslim who can see the good side of Islam and the Muslims who are exemplars of it, and can see the dark side but wishes it would cure itself.
He still buys this though "Islam has a marvellous history with developments in the fields of Literature, Science and The Arts far, far beyond that of my nation in bygone days." Its like saying that after leading the race you were content to stand still while the West accelerated past you. Has nyone ever asked why?

Has nyone ever asked why? — TeddyBearof course beyond the technological achievements the idea that the west has accelerated past the muslim world in terms of morality and ethical standards is entirely nonsensical. the west loves to hang the dirty washing of others in the public glare whilst limiting their own wrongdoings to being mere errors of judgement or in the case of iraq blame the minor offices of government whilst their leaders are praying that their bloodlust can be met. getting back to the technological achievements , it is nonsensical to consider these achievements to be the sole domain of the west since many peoples contribute from all over the world. why do we in the west prosper, its simply because we are prepared to steal, abuse and be corrupt any other country to meet our greed . its why we are imperial powers who still today seek to colonise in the name of democracy and freedom whilst asset stripping nations and of course their peoples of their human rights.

I see you asked Why? and couldn't find an answer either. My reason is called Enlightenment. When the West began to throw off the limiting shackles of religion then they advanced technologically. If you only believe science as described in religious books then you are bound not to make discoveries and make advances in science.
