Warsi & Ahmed Save The Day As Powerful Mosque Leaders Silent Print E-mail
Tuesday, 04 December 2007

logo_red.gifA British teacher convicted of insulting religion in Sudan by allowing her students to name a teddy bear "Mohammed" has left Khartoum on a flight home, the British Foreign Office said Monday.

Gillian Gibbons, freed after Sudan President Omar al-Bashir granted her a presidential pardon earlier Monday, earlier apologized for any distress her actions may have caused.

"I have great respect for the Islamic religion and would not knowingly offend anyone, and I am sorry if I caused any distress," Gibbons said in a statement read by Sayeeda Warsi, one of two Muslim lawmakers who traveled to Sudan to secure her release.
Gibbons, 54, was sentenced to 15 days in jail last Thursday. Without a pardon, she would have remained in jail another six days.
She left Sudan on an Emirates flight to London via Dubai hours after the courts ruled she should be deported after completing her sentence. Watch how diplomats worked to defuse the crisis.

The Briton will land early on Tuesday morning at London's Heathrow Airport, where she is expected to make a statement to the media.
Gibbons also praised the "kindness and generosity" of the Sudanese and said she would be sad to leave her job at Unity High School and would miss her students "terribly."

The pardon came following efforts by Nazir Ahmed and Sayeeda Warsi, Muslim members of Britain's House of Lords, to persuade the Sudanese government that releasing Gibbons would create international good will toward their country.
The House of Lords is the UK's upper parliamentary chamber.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown welcomed news of Gibbons' pardon."Common sense has prevailed," Brown said.

MPACUK congratualtes Lord Ahmed and Saeeda Warsi for doing an excellent job on behalf of an innocent woman and help save the Muslim community's reputation. Not suprisingly not a single half-witted Mosque Leader did anything at all of any substance during the crisis despite a new report saying they have over £100 million in the bank. Student leaders, too, were poorly organised and most did nothing.

The Muslim public and MPACUK send our thanks! - keep up the good work - post your comments here - word on the street is they will get to hear them.

Lastly we urge all Muslims to get involved in politics and do more for the community, Britain and the world.

pointless article. since not one of us know what was happening in the background.

frankly whether we like it or not, mrs gibbons who has behaved thus far impeccably where muslims and sudan is concerned - in her public comments - acted outside of sudans laws was convicted and given a nominal sentence. a slap on the wrist so to speak.

to now demand that muslims should react as hysterically as the anti muslim brigade in the uk is completely bonkers.

the fact is everyone in the media lost interest in the woman once she showed compassion, good humour and praise for the people of sudan and even her jailers and she explicitly did not blame muslims or islam.

maybe this is the more telling aspect rather than the action or alleged inaction of mosques and their inhabitants.

She wasn't convicted of a traffic violation or cruelty to us Teddy Bears she was convicted of insulting Islam by naming one of us "Muhammed", hence it has 100% to do with Islam and 100% to do with the Muslims who sentenced her and the Muslims who threatened her life.

actually its entirely your fault for being a teddy bear.

your point is rather silly, the fact is islam as any faith, as any nation is apt to do is set boundaries , laws for people to work within.

the fact is sudans laws do not allow blasphemy and under those circumstances an individual can be found guilty.

in the uk there are blasphemy laws and race laws that include religious groups such as jewish people and sikhs, they too are protected and anyone deemed to act outside of those rather wide ranging laws will find themselves imprisoned.

try insulting judaism and or jewish people with a teddy in this country and you will soon find out how 'reasonable' our laws actually happen not to be.

I can assure you that Jewish people would have a great laugh if we Teddy Bear's were called Moses, Abraham, Jonah etc - each with some distinctive motif.

Jews laugh along with their religion. "Moses says keep taking the tablets" etc. Judaism is FUN. Jewish festivals are FUN. Are your's?

Some of the greatest humourists in the World are Jewish. Its fun, fun fun, all the way.
