US Muslims Guide Ill-informed Media Print E-mail
Thursday, 15 November 2007

264739_muslim_girl_2.jpgRealizing that deep-seated misconceptions are propagated through ill-informed media, a leading US Muslims group is launching a nationwide campaign to help the media with accurate information about Islam and Muslims.

"It is our duty, and that of the Muslim community, to make sure every journalist who writes about Islam or Muslims has access to accurate information," Rabiah Ahmed, Communications Coordinator at the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), said in a press release.

"Because we work with media professionals on a daily basis, we know the vast majority of journalists are doing the best job they can with the information resources they have available."

The campaigners will distribute the newly-published "American Muslims: A Journalist's Guide to Understanding Islam and Muslims" to some 40,000 media professionals nationwide.

One section offers a brief overview about Islam's basic beliefs, teachings and history.

Another, titled Challenging Common Misconceptions, clarifies the most common stereotypes, including Islam's stance on women, respect of other religions and stance on violence.

The guide also offer best practices for reporting on the Muslim community and definitions of the terminology often used in news stories or editorials.

Media professionals can request a free copy of the document through the " Beyond Stereotypes " Web site.

Negative portrayal of Islam and Muslims has become the norm in the media since the 9/11 attacks.

American Muslims, estimated at between six to seven million, complain that conservative newspapers and radio and television shows fuel anti-Muslim sentiments.

Rabbi Eric H. Yoffie, president of the Union for Reform Judaism — the US largest Jewish movement — has named and shamed Christian fundamentalist talk show hosts like Pat Robertson and Franklin Graham for demonizing Muslims.

Misconceptions

CAIR, America's largest Muslim civil liberties group, said the initiative comes at a time misconceptions and prejudices about Islam have surged dramatically.

"We recognize that much of the negative perception of Islam and Muslims is the result of negative actions by a tiny minority of Muslims," it said.

"That minority should not be allowed to overshadow the vast majority of Muslims in this country and worldwide who reject terrorism and religious extremism."

CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper said widespread misconceptions also originate from ignorance of Islam teachings.

He noted that many still believe that Islam is associated with violence and extremism.

"Too often the faith of Islam gets painted with these kinds of negative actions," Hooper told CBN News.

"What we're trying to say is the vast majority of Muslims in this country and worldwide reject terrorism reject religious extremism."

A September survey by Pew Research Center and the Pew Forum founded that the majority of Americans know very little about the practices of Islam.

It indicated that attitudes toward Muslims and Islam have grown more negative in recent years.

I agree that Muslims receive negative press coverage. The tragedy is that the actions of a few terroriss and radical Islamists tend to cast a shadow over the whole community.

The output of radical websites like MPAC UK has elements of the statements made by people who actually carry out suicide bombing. You cannot blame the public and press from highlighting that association and create that negative opinion. How are the public to tell who would kill them and who would just talk about the justice of killing them?

We see polls of alarming numbers of Muslims who support 7/7 bombers or who think that its OK to threaten UK Jews because of Israel.

All societies will highlight the threats. They won't bother to write goddy-goody stories because being a goody-goody is an expected norm.

We don't see ANY positive stories about ANY faith group in the UK because it isn't news. In fact, I would say that the output of UK Christian clerics gets a bashing too.

Take the example of the Muslim trainee hairdresser story. Here was a woman already rejected for 24 jobs and on the 25th she cites discrimination because she insists she must wear hijab. Its a fact that in a women's hairdresser you don't cover your head and wear an attractive hairstyle. That is the Western Cultural norm. Why is someone objecting to that? Its the action that creates the negativity and not the reporting.

Well, to the vast majority of people this is an interesting news story about how someone not getting a job resorts to spurious politically motivated machinations. Why not adopt the "When in Rome policy?"

Of course the press will associate Islam with violence and extremism when there are so many examples of violence and extremism that is done in the name of Islam (evidenced by Koranic verses on martyr videos and quotes from the Koran).

I think CAIR is wasting its time. Why should anyone care to understand a sanitised version of Islam?

All I know is that if my neighbour and I can get on, if my neighbour doesn't try to impose any restrictions on me because I am not Muslim, doesn't treat me negatively because I am not a Muslim then I don't need to understand a thing about Islam. I just need to relate to my neighbour as a friendly citizen who I can share things with.

Anyway, UK schools cover Islam and other religions in their curriculum.

You will not aachieve harmony by highlighting disharmony caused by a refusal to accept the UK for what it is instead of what you would like it to be. (I refer to Dr Bari's article).

its a great initiative by CAIR, shame it is 10 years to late and 7 years after MPACUK started to highlight the issue.

Zesto,

the only extremist that come on the website are Zionists, and if you want proof of Zionist pretending to be Muslims then I'll send the link where mpacuk exposed them...

I note from the CAIR link that you can either recommend a journalist to receive it, or request one as a journalist - or pay for one. Not very encouraging. Why not publish it as a public PDF?

Being new here pls show us that link. It doesn't seem to me that Zesto was pretending to be a Muslim.

Islam is a religion that is no-aggressive. In fact, it says in the Qu'ran, "Allah does not like aggressors." However, it does say that Muslims are allowed to defend themselves against aggression if they are attacked or driven out of their homes or if someone tries to force them not to practise their religion. Muslims are allowed to defend themselves against aggression but they are not allowed to start it.

How was 7/7 an act of defense?

WHat did the slaughter of schoolchildren in Beslan have to do with defense?

What is being defended in Darfur?

You get the picture!
