Horrific Attack by Train Staff on Young Girl - For wearing Hijab! Print E-mail
Tuesday, 13 June 2006

Whilst most of us go about our regular train commutes without fears of abuse and harassment, one sister has been left traumatised by her experience during one of her regular commutes. Usually we see the railway staff, that work to ensure our journeys are pleasant, as a symbol of safety and security. Yet for Nisa Khan this connotation has been sharply destroyed by the abuse that she suffered at the hands of those very railway staff. She was taunted and harassed by an emplyee of Central Trains; why, you ask? Because she is a Muslim…another classic example of a few individuals abusing their authoritative positions to carry out their Islamophobic witchhunt against an innocent, young sister.

Whilst most railway staff do work to protect and serve us we must ensure that those that don’t, be brought to justice and removed from positions of such authority and importance. If you fail to take action to defend this sister, don’t cry to others if the same happens to you tomorrow

Central Trains are investigating claims that workers trapped a Muslim girl in a carriage and subjected her to racist abuse at Leicester railway station.

Nisa Khan, 21, from Leicester was waiting on a train for Birmingham when the driver told her to get off as the destination was Sheffield.

But she said he then locked the doors leaving her trapped inside.

She was later released by the British Transport Police. Central Trains said the matter would be fully investigated.

A spokesperson said: "We are taking this incident very seriously.

"Once the investigation has taken place, we will be speaking to the woman concerned."

Ms Khan, a student at University of Central England, Birmingham, said the driver was joined by two other colleagues who taunted her and prevented her from leaving the carriage. (This horrific incident happened whilst n innocent sister merely attempting to take her regular journey back to university. There was no provocation and yet the train drivers felt that they had the right to act in such an appallingly disgraceful manner. In what world is it ok for the drivers to have acted in such a manner?)

She called police on her mobile phone who arrived after around 20 minutes and freed her from the train.

Ms Khan said: "What normally is a one-hour journey ended up being the worst day of my life.” I got into in Birmingham at 11pm because I was too scared to take another train, I had to get dropped off and I keep suffering panic attacks."

She was travelling on the 18.14 service from Leicester to Birmingham to go back to university on 4 June.

What Can You Do?

For further information on this story and this sisters personal account visit the forum. In the sisters account she  strongly believes her head scarf, was the reason why she was subjected to racist bullying, taunting and harassment at the hands of the Central Trains drivers and is determined to seek justice. Furthermore, she has been left traumatized and in fear of travelling by train in case she encounters the same workers and is put through the same horrifying ordeal.

This sister has been left ‘traumatised’ by these events and yet we never imagine that it can happen to us. But what if next time it is us that is sitting on the train, or your mother or your sister that gets taunted with such abuse? Most people would sit at the front to the train to be nearest to the driver for safety reasons, that safety seems to have been destroyed by the acts of a few malicious individuals. It seems ironic that those we look to protect us are the ones who have now set out to hurt us. Whilst we can assume that most train drivers are not of this calibre, these few individuals have tarnished the others.

It is time now that we brought these cold-hearted individuals to justice. We cannot allow this behaviour to go unquestioned, giving others a free pass to follow their lead. It is our duty to push for answers to what happened and to push for the removal of these individuals from our public services.

MPACUK urge you to take 5 minutes to defend not only this sister who was subjected to a brutal example of Islamophobia, but ALL sisters who have been subject to this kind of abuse or who may be subject to it in the future. If we do not defend our sisters there will be no one else who will and those who commit such acts of abuse and vulgarity will be left to continue to destroy the lives of innocent sisters.

The contact number for Central Trains is t:0121 634 2040.

I just called them and explained my concern over the incident, especially because I have a young daughter who sometimes travels by herself.

I asked what action Central Trains would take over this incident. They asked me to e-mail my concern to Mark Hollis, Customer Relations Manager, and I would get a response.

I will e-mail, but I think it worthwhile for people to phone as well - there is something more urgent and important about a phone call than an e-mail.

The key thing is to be polite but firm. Rehearse the point you want to make in advance and remain calm on the phone. Remember the person answering the phone is likely to be, like most people, a decent human being with nothing in common with the thugs involved.

Please everyone take a few minutes to phone and e-mail - it could be you, your sister or your daughter next time.

Absolutely shocked by this article. I have sent customer services an email.

as below.

Dear Sir

I have recently been made aware of an incident that occurred on 4 june at 18:14 on the leicester to birmingham train. Where a university student, muslim female, was subjected to a horrendous experience at the hands of a train driver.

Where she was subjected to false imprisonment and racist and Islamphobic taunts, not by one but 3 male staff members.

As a Muslim man who frequently uses the train to commute as part of my journey, i am quite shocked and horrified that Centro have allowed this to happen.

Please look at this email as a complaint. Please also be made aware that I have contacted the Muslim body that I represent to also voice their concerns.

I believe that BTP are looking into this matter, what I would like to know what action has been taken against the persons responsible for this.

I hope you can keep me updated, or in sense I will contact the organisations and Centro will have a protest at Each main train station.

Unfortunatly this story is one of many, there are many stories like this that go unreported. At least in this case it has been highlighted and all the brothers and sisters i urge you to do your bit and show your utter disgust and outrage at this incident by contacting the central train email/ phone number. Also the TUC email and phone only by doing our best actions can we root out this kind of racist behaviour towards muslims in the UK.

Dear sir or madam:

I am writing to express my disgust, after hearing about an incident that
occurred at Leicester station involving Ms Nisa Khan and Central Train staff.

I was shockingly appalled to hear the ordeal she had suffered at the hands on
employees of Central Trains. This quite clearly highlights the rise of
islamophobia in the country, however such improper and unprofessional behaviour
is totally unacceptable, especially by railway staff who should be ensuring a
pleasant journey in a safe environment for all fare paying customers.

I trust that this investigation will be thoroughly investigated and appropriate
action to be taken. I await to hear the findings of the investigation.

Your faithfully

When I read this article I felt disgusted. How can this happen to a sister living in a multicultral Britain.
If this happened in Bradford, there would of been a riot. (Not that I condone rioting).
The authourities in question should take some action right away. We will not stand for any Islamophobic jibes from people who work in public transport.

The thugs in question should be sacked straightaway.

I agree with and will carry out the action requested by MPAC.

However, I am beginning to think that events are getting out of hand. Is it not time we created a Muslim Security Service for the benefit of all our community ?

I am sure there are already such firms in existence and they could certainly franchise their operations throughout the UK.

I am not talking vigilante but I am talking of a group of individuals who are trained and able to ensure that there is support for the victim and that the authorities ( for whom we pay taxes) follow up all incidents in the correct manner.

In time it could also provide services such as surveillance and detectives for those in need.

If we cannot get muslims in large numbers to join the police ( the ONLY way to get a real community police service ) then let's SET UP a force in each major city.

Their should be CCTV cameras operating in the railway station. Their should be enough ground evidence to capture the entire situation.

This is clearly a Matter of "Health & Safety". These 3 Members of Staff, should be promptly dismissed and this incident should be further exposed to the Print MEDIA. Furthermore the Management Authorities should offer financial remedy and equally apologise.

It is very true MUSLIMS, we are now living in a Islamaphobic Britain. Their is ample evidence of Hatred. I say "Bring it on". Eye for Eye, tooth for tooth. We need to be proactive and not re-active , we neeed strong political measures in order to prevent these kind of measures happening. We need a "WATCHDOG"

What we need is a collection of Statistics, related to evidences after and before 7/7 regarding Racial and Relgious Hatred. We need to EXPOSE and show the gaps that exist within the Police force. We need to SHOW, how the POLICE have failed to protect and introduce safety measures for Muslims. Consquently we advocate the establishment of a Security FORCE, either made up my Muslims or subcontracted as the brother mentioned above.

It is the hurt and offence this has caused her and who knows others that have gone unreported.
One must think, has this incident left me able to continue with my daily work, has it caused me financial loss, or is it going to cause me financial loss. If the answer is NO then that individual should not automatically look at pound signs.
Here, we must act in a manner where changes need to be made, policies need to be adhered to and those responsible should either be punished or if issues of diversity, then proper training and respect for others should be force fed into a system, conclusion that it DON'T happen again.

Salim Mohd: Just a point of information - Islam is not "the only religion that prays directly to God". Protestant Christians - including members of the Church of England - pray directly to God as well.
Perhaps you're thinking of Catholics, who often - although not always - pray to saints asking them to intercede on their behalf.
This is all pretty meaningless, of course. Whether someone prays directly to God or not is irrelevant. What is important is how good someone's heart is - whether Muslim, Christian or atheist.

As Salaamu Alaikum

Dear Muslims of the UK:

In the 16 yrs. since I reverted to Islam, I have been attacked PHYSICALLY more than 5 times. I know that each and ever time the attempt was made to hurt me it was because I was Muslimah. I know it by what the prepetrators said about our religion. I also believe that these things happened to me as a protection for other sisters. Each time it was reported to the police and taken to the shurah boards to warn other sisters. I believe that Allah Subhanah wa Ta'ala put this test on me rather than a more defenseless sister because I can fight. Every time someone touched me not said something but actually put his (cowardly khufr men)hands on me I gave him the ghetto beat down he was requesting. I tell you sisters WE HAVE TO PROTECT OURSELVES. We have to stay at home as much as possible. And when we travel we should be with our mahram or other sisters. WE SHOULD NEVER TRAVEL ALONE but if we have to then be prepared to PROTECT yourself. Here are a few tips:
1. Try to dig his eyes out
2. Step on his feet
3. The groin area is good to kick or knee but preps are putting protection there.

Brother haneef. The Prophet during his time in Mecca and when the Muslims were in small numbers asked for them to be patient and put up with the opression. When the Muslims went to Medina that fear was lifted, as the Muslims lived amongst Muslims and the order was then given to fight for justice and mind my french, but I would say the permission was given to Kick Ass and take no crap. So having read sister Hyman's comments i would agree with her way of thinking. Be honest brother if your sister or mother or daughter were subjected to what the sister had been subjected to, would you apply what you are saying in your comments. Brother it is easy to preach but when it comes to practising what one preaches it is not so easy. If I had been on that train or on that platform by Allah I would made those Kufars scream.
During the time of the Prophet's saty in Medina, a Jew made mockery of a sister in a veil by pulling it off. A brother saw this and killed the Jew, in turn he was killed by other Jews. The Prophet upon hearing this news ordered the complete destruction of the tribe. What you have to understand brother is we as Muslims are very tolerant but there are certain things a Kufar must not do and one of them is to degrade our sisters.

Dear Muslims:

This is for all of us including myself first. When I urge my beloved sisters to protect themselves I mean only from physical attack. When dumb people say ignorant things to me I ignore them or say "May Allah guide you to the truth" but when someone attempts to TOUCH me to harm me I go balistic and I will always insha Allah fight back to the death. But Bro Haneef I did take a look at what I did wrong in those five attacks against me. One was to be travelling alone not at night in the daytime but we should not travel alone!
STAY IN YOUR HOMES SISTERS or go out prepared to protect your honor, dignity and your life. I want to thank the person who stood up for my opinion. This is the unity I am talking about. We just have to stand up for what is right. Back our brothers and sisters when they are right and when they are wrong make them see the right way. May Allah SWTA bless the Muslims with success over the hypocrits and the kafiruun AMIN

This was not a "horrific attack". It was a very unpleasant incident carried out by people who are clearly unpleasant idiots.

What disturbs me is how aggresive the general tone of the comments are here. You are not justified in carrying bleach to spray to blind people. In any case it is against the law. The idea that women should not travel alone or (even more ridiculous) "stay at home if possible" is ludicrous. England is a usually safe, sophisticated country and attacks like this are so rare that they should not affect how people behave in their daily lives. The extrapolation from a single incident to an anti-muslim "witch-hunt" is very silly. I have spent my entire adult life living in British inner cities with large muslim populations and I have never *once* witnessed an anti-muslim "hate-crime". I'm not denying they happen, they just don't happen that often.

If the UK is to carry on having good race-relations (which it certainly does have relative to a lot of countries) then races and creeds need to spend time together, interact and find what they have in common, not what divides them. Keeping the "sisters" at home (or sending them out under guard) will only divide our communities further and breed further mutual mistrust making things like the very unpleasant experience Nisa Khan had more common.

how excitable your correspondents are over a truly minor incident which is already being investigated by the train company and the Police. Obviously some peoples' idea of a horrific assault is very different to mine.

Nice to know I form part of a barbaric society, am to be spied on by a Muslim secret police and likely to have bleach sprayed in my eyes.

Just to let you know, a spray bottle of bleach is a firearm in English law and carrying one would get you a mandatory five year minimum sentence.

Long live persecution complexes.

As Salamualaikum All.

I was absolutely disgusted after reading what happened to poor innocent Sister Nisa Khan. The behaviour of the rail staff was totally unaccaptable and brutal. We are living in a civilised society where this kind of thing is not supposed to happen. I give my deepest sympathies.

I have a few advices for the sister, (and others for that matter):

1) At this sensitive time maybe it would be better not to cover your head. I know doing so is an Islamic obligation- I am a Muslim too, but after hearing your story it is obviously a most dangerous thing to cover your head and display Islamic signs and symbols at the moment when the west is opposed to Muslims. You can hold your Islam in your heart, pray a lot, read the Quran a lot and fast a lot all in the privacy of your own home, only refrain from doing these things publicly. Nobody knows your religion if you are a woman who doesn't cover her head or a man who doesn't have a beard. Remember, in the days of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) Muslim women were ordered to cover their heads for their own safety. But it appears that today it is not safe for a Muslim woman if she actually does cover her head (here in the west). Allah the Most Merciful does not want you to be tortured and abused the way you were, and Islam is most tolerant and understanding towards the time bound changes. And in Islam when you are faced with two evils you are supposed to choose the lesser of the two. If you do conceal your Islamic identity at this time you are not being a coward. You are only being sensible which is the correct Islamic attitude. Put your faith in Allah but do everything you can to prevent danger - you have to take all possible wordly circumstances into consideration even though you trust in Allah; and your safety is most important. I am advising all this for your own good. But if you are firm on covering your head MAKE SURE you travel with many other people, in large numbers and not on your own as you could be victimised.
2)Refer this matter to the Islamic Human Rights Commission. Make sure you have made all the necessary complaints to the rail authorities, or if there is anything you are uncertain about, find out.
3)If you are in a great state of desperation recite the prayer recited by Prophet Yunus (peace be upon him) when he was in the whale: "La Ilaha Illah Anta..." It WILL help you to regain your strength. If you need councilling contact the Siters' Haven a 24 hour freephone helpline on 07816425148

May Allah watch over you my darling.

My regards to the little Muslim girl it must have been very distressing for her, if it actually happened as is alleged. I must say however that the reaction to it is just a little over the top. My own daughter is a very beautiful blonde girl who dresses fashionably but modestly. She is tall and slim and is a credit to her father and I. She is also unable to walk in a local Muslim area. I accompanied her on a pleasant Sunday afternoon to town when Asian males of all ages came out of their shops to ogle her and make remarks in their "mother" tongue. She was dreadfully embarressed, I was merely angry and told them off for perving all over her in my loudest voice.I also pointed out that they would require a huge imagination to make their ambitions anything but a fantasy......I used much more down to earth language of course, lest they be in any doubt.
Funnily enough they understood me very well.I have the greatest respect for the modesty and family values of the Muslims I know but cant help feeling this twisted attitude to ALL Western girls and women is connected to the paranoia you display towards your own, dressed up as "respect".The girl was thank God unharmed and after reporting the incident that should be the end of the matter. Some of the posts here do nothing but reinforce the stereotype of the hysterical, compensation claiming, victim mentality Muslim which the media is portraying on a daily basis.
Say your prayers thank God she is safe and get on with your lives.

Dear Cathy,

I am sorry to hear of your exerience. A good mulism would not have treated you or your sister in that manner - the religion forbids it. As for the Muslim girl trapped in the carriage, she has every right to complain and it is important she gets justice. I'm sure, had it been your daughter you would expect the same. Kind Regards.

I am very sorry to hear what happened to the young girl. I also agree that the behaviour of staff was unacceptable and righly so had been investigated.

But I am even more puzzled by the fervent reaction of most of these commentators who are "absolutely shocked and horrified".
Some suggesting "eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth" or 'fighting back to death".
Some proposing to create "vigilante style" groups while others prefer a softer route suggesting to "stay at home". That's right "stay at home" is one of the wise suggestions to women. Well, I call that imprisonment too!

Finally I would like to ask all those commentators who felt "horrified and shocked" a simple question:

why no one is horrified and shocked by events like last week's murder of a 17 years old muslim wife at the hands of her muslim husband and muslim brother in law?
Why no one of you hypocrites are horrified by the 12 honour killing perpetrated by muslim men against muslimahs each year in Great Britain ? (CPS data)

The MET and CPS are investigating 100 death or suicides of muslim women because of concern that some of them might had been victim of honour killing. THIS IS HORRIFYING
