BMF & MCB: Eid On Saturday Print E-mail
Thursday, 11 October 2007

arabic_calligraphy.jpgThe UK Ruiyate Hilal Committee has announced that Eid will be on Saturday insha Allah. Saudi Arabia has announced Eid on Friday.

An announcement is still awaited from the Islamic Cultural Centre, London (as at 7pm, Thursday).

Sir Iqbal Sacranie hosted a panel discussion on the eid announcement and crescent sighting at 4.30 pm on Wednesday10th October. Panelists included Sheikh Sulaiman Gani, Shaikh Ghulam Rabbani, Sheikh Haytham and Dr Usama Hasan. The aim was to seek much-needed consensus and unity on the announcement of Eid.

A note from amateur astronomers: Dr Usama Hasan's next planetarium shows at the Royal Observatory Greenwich are on Saturday 27th October 2007 insha'Allah. He notes, "timings are 2pm & 3pm - Starlife (a state-of-the-art 3-D film where we take you inside the Sun, amongst other treats); 4pm - The Sky Tonight, a "live" guide to the current night sky - it will be a full moon night, and we show you around the basic stars and constellations, etc., a good way to learn them. A trip to Greenwich is a good family fun day out, perhaps regard it as a delayed Eid trip? If you've never been there, you don't know what you're missing! The shows run daily, of course, led by different presenters. Further details at www.rog.nmm.ac.uk

Check the MCB website again...: Quote

The MCB have changed the day of Eid fro Saturday to Friday. (I am not sure why you mentioned BMF because they only represent MI-5, not the Muslim community).

Anyways coming back to the MCB, I am shocked by their apparent volte-face on Eid. Changing the day of Eid without any notice or reason is tantamount to political hypocrisy. What was the reason for this sudden change in Eid date?
Especially when it did not matter if we had to fast an extra date ? Was it done under political pressure ? Consistency is what matters more to the faithful than whether that faith is right or wrong. The MCB should know that.

To quote Mirza Ghalib:

Wafadari basharte ustuwari asle eeman hai

Maray butkhane mein to kaabe men garo brahmin ko

(Loyalty conditioned by consistency is the quintessence of faith;

If the Brahmin dies in idolatry give him burial in Kaaba.)

What happened? I turned up for Jumu'ah on Friday at the An-Noor masjid in Acton, one of whose Imaams is Dr Dawud Abdullah, a well-known deputy at MCB, and everyone is well-dressed and smelling good (somewhat unusual, you see)... They're all celebrating 'Eid, it turns out! So I asked Dr Abdullah if I'm mistaken, and he seems quietly baffled that I am asking... Felt like an idiot... And yet I went with the Ruiyate Hilal Committee's decision, which was mentioned on the MCB website... What is going on??? I had to break my 30th fast and I missed Eid prayers! I've never been confused to this extent! A'uzubillah... Wassalaam

I think there is a concerted effort by some quarters amongst the community to break away from the following of Regents Park Mosque and follow scientific calculations. However this group of people is a fragile coalition with a disaster waiting to happen. In the meantime they are causing great fitna. I saw the alleged discussion on Islam Channel and it was a farce, staged to set the scene for a Saturday Eid. Unfortunately Sir Iqbal Sacranie is very biased and possible the cause of this MCB ambiguity.
