actionalert.jpgIt seems that Sabar Bros are not just content with being supporters of injustice and being hypocrites (how dare they say they will not sell these blood-dates one Ramadhan and go completely against their word the next?!). They want to go that extra mile and are now a bunch of liars aswell.

Sabar Bros is my local shop and I was extremely disappointed that they had put money ahead of morals, and had gone out to stock Israeli dates even though they were quite adamant they wouldn't sell them this time round, so I decided to do some investigating.

I thought I should ring them first to see if maybe I could reason with them over the 'phone (they seem to be really on edge throughout Ramadhan - I think working around food and not being able to eat it really gets to them) but I always got the same response:

"Hello, Sabar Bros, how may I help you?"

"Assalaamualaikum, I was wondering, do you sell Israeli dates?"

"Yes..."

"Why? Don't you know the money goes to help kill Palestinians?"

"Sorry, we are busy and have a lot of customers" *Phone goes dead*

Now I did kinda feel for them, I mean answering a customer's concerns are obviously not that important especially when you know that you aren't going to make money out of it, so to make things easier for both parties I went along to the shop and talk to them face-to-face (I know, I'm helpful like that).

However, they had me confused with someone blind when they tried to explain why they are selling Israeli dates.

They explained how they didn't know how Israeli dates got into their shop. He said that one box came in by mistake (as if one big Israeli box just happened to be sitting there unnoticable with all those small Iranian dates packaging) and that they weren't doing it intentionally.

Now, I would've believed them if it wasn't for two things:

1) There seemed to be alot of old Israeli date boxes lying around outside the shop (yeah, they were never really that clean)

2) They had labelled some of the Israeli dates as Jordan dates to mislead people (they must think we're really stupid, seeing as it still said 'Made in Israel' on the side of the boxes)

When I mentioned these two points to them, things got interesting.

They proceeded to shout at me and say that I was making a mountain out of a molehill.

Errr no, you're selling dates whose profits go and support the apartheid state Israel, I'm pretty sure that's a big issue.

But I digress, let me finish my tale:
So they continued shouting at me, said that the Palestinians got what they deserved, blah blah blah, I shouldn't come back, yadda yadda yadda, and that they were going to keep selling them. End of.

Now I'm not sure about you, but the fact that really annoyed me (and man, are there loads or what!) was that they were actually proud of selling these dates.

What kind of Muslim shop would openly support Israel - a state which has been killing innocent people for years?

We can't let them get away with this and I for one am going to make sure that they know that I will continue to boycott their shop if they keep on selling Israeli blood-dates.

I hope you will do the same too.

Don’t be silent in the face of oppression – please 'phone them now and ask them why they are selling Israeli dates, and that you will boycott their shop unless they stop selling Israeli produce:

REMEMBER: Check whether your local shops are selling Israeli dates (Boycott all produce of Israel - including Carmel, King Solomon and Jordan River dates). Ask your local shops to support the boycott. You can download and print off a leaflet here: http://www.mpacuk.org/content/view/4034/34/

I am shocked that someone should be so triumphal about a verbal attack on a shop and shop-keeper for selling dates.

Its intimidation and I believe the shop-keeper would be in his rights to have called the police.

Just because YOU have an opinion about what selling Israeli dates means, it does NOT mean that anyone else should be forced to share your opinion.

Why not go and remonstrate with your local branch of Tesco or Sainsbury's for selling Israeli dates and products?

I'll tell you why you don't do it. Because you are a coward who feels its OK to intimidate a Muslim shop-keeper because you think you can handle it.

You are targetting the shop-keeper BECAUSE he is a Muslim and that is racially aggravated incitement under the law.

Just because you are a Muslim and your victim is a Muslim does not release you from the racist and religious incitement claim.

BTW its also libel because you make claims about what the shop-keeper did and what he said (about Palestinians).

How about testing that in a court of law?

Also, how fickle? You say you would continue to boycott them if the sold Israeli dates. Presumably you mean that you would NOT boycott them because they once sold Israeli dates.

That just shows your sense of morlaity and adherence to your convictions is weak.

The pressure getting to you ?. You don't understand- first it will be the dates and then it will build to the complete freedom and rights of the Palestinians. Your time is up. Zionism will be dead its just a matter of time.

I'm not sure why boycotting Israeli dates should be applying pressure to me. I think you have a right not to eat Israeli dates or not use computers that contain designs by Israelis. You are consistent, aren't you?

It seems to me that the pressure is on the Muslim Community who try and pretend solidarity with Palestinians and yet can't help using and selling Israeli goods and products, so creating a dilemma of conscience.

Do I see you going down to PC World and remonstrating with the store manager that he's selling products with Intel inside and Microsoft operating systems?

No, you'd rather intimidate a shopkeeper trying to make a decent living and supporting his community with open-all-hours service.

Did you know that Agrexco, an Israeli company, carries a large proportion of ALL fruit and vegetables whether Israeli or not. Why aren't you boycotting any fruit & veg carried by them?

The point is that its all a hollow gesture that has no effect, except on the poor shop-keeper you are intimidating.
