Two Set to be Britain’s first Muslim Women MPs Print E-mail
Friday, 28 September 2007
346207_houses_of_parliament.jpgLONDON (UK): Two Muslim women prospective parliamentary candidates could become Britain’s first Muslim women MPs at the next general election, reports the respected weekly “The Muslim News”.

Ms Yasmin Qureshi, 44, of Pakistani origin, and Rushnara Ali, 32, of Bengali origin, have been selected for the seats in Bolton South East (Northern England) and Bethnal Green and Bow, (East London) respectively., said the weekly in its latest issue.

Qureshi, a barrister and currently the human rights adviser to Mayor of London’s office, has worked for the Government Legal Services and the Crown Prosecution Service as well as heading the Criminal Legal Section of the UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) and later directing the Department of Judicial Administration there.

In the past, she has been the Chairperson of the Human Rights and Civil Liberties Working Group of the Association of Muslim Lawyers and has provided guidance on rights under the anti-terrorism and state security legislation.

She will be succeeding Labour MP Brian Iddon, who won by a 56.9 per cent majority at the last general election. She believes she was chosen for the candidacy because they thought “I had the widest experience in terms of international issues, national issues and different things I had done in my life.”

Qureshi also believes her commitment to the Labour Party, which she has been a member of since her teens, may have played a part.

Rushanara Ali is vying to win back Labour’s safe seat in Bethnal Green and Bow which was lost to George Galloway of the Respect Coalition in 2005 by a 35.9 per cent majority. Ali wants to pick up the pieces after Galloway, who she feels being “a single issue politician”, has divided the community.

The Respect Coalition has not yet chosen their candidate for the constituency.

A graduate from Oxford University, Ali is no stranger to working in community organisations. Currently the Associate Director of the Young Foundation, she worked as a research assistant to Michael Young, one of last century’s great social thinkers, who is known for setting up the Open University and the Economic and Social Research Council amongst dozens of other institutions.

She has also worked as a Research Fellow at the Institute for Public Policy Research and as Parliamentary Assistant to Oona King (former MP for Bethnal Green & Bow).

This is fantastic news. I have recently conducted examined Rushnara Ali's background and her contribution in very many areas. She appears to be very articulate, experienced and someone who is able to make a positive contribution to Bethnal Green and Bow. Despite not being a Labour member or apologist for the party, I feel there is a desperate need for elected women from all under-represented communities, including Britain's Bangladeshi one.

I must say that these two women have the potential of serving as good Members of Parliament (MP), but they must remember not to only serve Muslims, but all their constituents. They are not in Parliament for Islam, but for the people that elected them.

Yasmin Qureshi is a rather secular person, I think she is a Labour person in the Muslim community, as opposed to a Muslim in the Labour party. I think from what I have seen of her in Brent.

However the interesting thing is Labour has selected these 2 women for "Muslim seats", as opposed to selecting Muslims who can win in any seat. Just goes to show the Tories are not the only ones who believe in having token politicians.

I agree a lot with brother Mashfiq. I would also like to say that i hope all the Muslim MP's are not only servng their constituents but also defending Islam and speaking out against all the Islamophobic racists out there. Inshallah they are and continue to do so.

Just to clarify this point. We need Muslim MPs with principles and willing to stand up against injustice and enforcing their basic beliefs in their day to day affairs. For instance, when decisions about war arise, whether the MP should vote in favour or against the war- she should look at these issues objectively and whether they contradict the people's view and the teachings of her religion. If that means making an conscious decision to resign from a Government post, that is more worthy in my eyes than to just be corrupt and money grabbing politician.

They must also speak up, not only on Muslim issues, as many Muslim MPs and Lords have done, but on all matters affecting their fellow citizens. Whether this be environmental, health, international issues, community issues and very many other matters.

This good news! They are women first and NOT Muslim. There is nothing Muslim about Rushnara Ali. She is whiter than some whites, lives in SIN with a white christian and cant stop telling us she was at Cambridge.

Yasmin Qureshi is a ppor orator and her lifestyle is hardly Muslim.

The only thing these women have Muslim about them is that they were born into Muslims. That is all.

Showdown in Bethnal Green?
The shambles known as Respect haven't even selected a candidate.

This despite the fact that Galloway is claiming there will be an early election.

We should only vote for people who will stand up for Peace and Justice, and doubt either of these people will stand up against their Leaders when it up comes for standing for Peace and justice!

People of Bethnal and Bow should vote for Respect!

as i have said time and again, no ploitical party in this country will ever speak for Mulsims, wake up to this hard fact and stop joining these evil institutions. The fact that these women are even considering joining as MP's tells me a lot about there (muslim by name) upbringing.

I couldn't care less who which muslim joins which party, they will never make a difference.. wake up Muslims, smell the coffee......
