davidmiliband.jpg As the Labour Party conference chugs along at Bournemouth this week a rather atypical speech by Foreign Secretary – David Miliband, is bound to fuel the interests of many commentators on Foreign Policy and security matters.

Atypical in the sense that rather than tick-off the usual checklist of words and phrases expected by the Foreign Secretary this speech actually signalled a potential change in Britain’s relations with Muslims around the world and by extension, Muslims in Britain.

As well as making reference to the current protests in Burma and suggesting that Aung San Suu Kyi should be the next leader, Mr Miliband mentioned the phrase “learn the lessons” on numerous occasions when talking about the unmitigated disasters that are our interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Implicit in the speech was the admission that the current policies had not worked and perhaps a different approach than an armed response would have produced better results.

It is no secret that our interventions in Afghanistan and particularly in Iraq have not only been ineffective they have been hugely counterproductive.  Improving Britain’s vulnerability against the spectre of terrorism was the original reason for the invasion of Iraq then the reason changed when the truth started to trickle out about the lack of the now infamous WMD’s the story changed to one of regime change.  The likelihood of a terror attack against the UK has now increased thanks to our neo-con inspired interventions.

The speech talked about a “second wave” of policy.  This raises obvious questions that need to be answered in the short-term.  How will this second-wave change from the first wave?  What will the United States make of this change if it means a divergence from their foreign policy initiatives?  Will a divergence lead to the UK publicly disagreeing with the US?  What implications are there for the manufactured “crisis” that is Iran’s research programme into nuclear energy?

The Iranian question is particularly interesting.  Here is a Muslim nation that has pledged not to make nuclear weapons, has opened up its research programme to the IAEA and still it is threatened with war.  A perceptible momentum is building up for war particularly in the American and Israeli media.  The problem for the neo-cons though is four fold.  Firstly their previous interventions have been disastrous.  Secondly, we’ve all been here before.  Warnings about Armageddon in the Middle-East ring hollow while the Iraq war lingers on.  The public are sick of war and can see the obvious hypocrisy of a nuclear armed Israel feigning worries about Iran.  Thirdly, the armed forces of both the US and UK are deployed at full stretch there is simply no more capacity for any meaningful campaign.  Last but not least, Iran is not Iraq.  It is justified in equipping itself with nuclear energy and has cooperated with the IAEA to their satisfaction.  Iran will also defend itself tenaciously.

Mr Miliband has signalled a bold change of course in his first conference speech as Foreign Secretary.  Let’s hope he means what he says and this leads to real change in our relations with other countries, in particular Muslim countries.  Only by facing up to the truth of our disastrous misadventures can we hope to improve the international standing of our nation.  Our foreign policy should be just, equitable and in our nation’s best interests – not in the interests of the United States or a war-mongering neo-con-Zionist cabal.  MPACUK cautiously welcome this new initiative and we will closely monitor any signs of real change.  We hope to see them soon.

Milliband is a puppy.

I see that MPAC UK is using the code "Zionists" when they mean Jews, just as ArmingMyDinnerJacket has just expressed in his glorious Antisemitic speech at the UN where he mentioned that the danger was Zionism.

Iran will be prevented from acquiring nuclear technology whether Milliband likes it or not. There will be no occupation of Iran like there is in Iraq. It will be a purely strategic strike designed to destroy the capability to make nuclear devices, aimed at remote regions to minimise casualties.

If Iran chooses to respond with missiles at neighbours then they will discover missiles returned at Tehran and the destruction of their regime.

I believe that Iran won't actually retaliate because they risk their own anihilation.

Note how France is taking up the mantle of strong support for dealing with Iran. France has been a traditional ally of the Arab states of the region. Now they are not. You may see a strong USA/France alliance.

The key is NOT Milliband but Brown. At the end of the day Brown will decide.

BTW - who is it that threatens the UK because of Iraq?

Do you agree we must do everything in our power to hunt down these would-be terrorists and have a 56 day detention at least so that we maintain community cohesion?

Imagine the unrest if home-grwon terrorists carry out another atrocity in the UK. Maybe we wouldn't be able to hold the people back.

There he goes again the Zionist troll. It is a very old Zionist tactic to accuse people of being anti-Semitic when they are being anti-Zionist JamalA. Busy trying to blur the lines. Are you encouraging racial hatred against Muslims?

The AIPAC website is full of anti-Iranian, pro-war rhetoric, clearly Zionists want America to strike Iran. So how did you equate the above article with Zionism = Jewish?

I see you scum are using the same old tactic again.

Anyway, more to the point I think Milliband was quite promising. It is in otherwords an admission that foreign policy was the cause and I think MPAC should put this one down as a victory.

Keep up the good work and don't let monkeys like jamalA the above distract you.

Zionists deliberately conflate Zionism with Judaism as if they are the same thing. Jews exited before Israel and they could exist without Israel. The point of the Zionist tactic is to make critisism of the illegal Zioinst entity look like critisism of Jews in order to shut down criticism. The trouble for JamalA and his friends is taht they have been rumbled. Witness the appalling spectacle of the Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks proclaiming "Isreal! You make us proud!" when Israel was busy mudering Lebanese civillians in 2006. Judaist!

JamalA you muppet,

Before you worry about Muslims being anti semetic, clean up your own Jewish house. The Jewish community need to tackle Islamophobia and only when they do, will Muslims be obliged to clean up their own house.

In regards to Miliband, I do not think Muslims will get much succour from him, he might be a shade less virolent then Jack Straw, but none the less he will not change poicy dramatically unless the Muslim electorate engage in the political process on a systematic level.

Let us hope that Gordon Brown can keep his eyes on reality rather than gazing into the eyes of Bush, as Blair did. The Neo-Con-Zionists in America want to attack Iran and we know that they will find any excuse they can. Would it not be better if they just asked Israel to get rid of their nuclear weapons? I will not hold my breath for that day of course. Even a blind man can see that Zionists make all of the decisions for Bush. He lacks the brain required to think never mind actually decide.

As for JamalA. You seem to think you know alot but in reality you are just another brain dead trouble maker. You should get a job from Bush. Perhaps you could sit on the front of those missiles that you claim will be heading towards Tehran.

Yes, I know that "monkey" was intended as an Antisemitic slur as in ".... turned the Jews into pigs and apes...".

Its OK. Comments like that have their own treasure and reward.

I trust Milliband - he seems a man of his word who thankfully doesnt serve fools gladly but really i cant see anyone better fitted to head the FCO effectively - I understand Millibands well liked and respected outside politics as well. I think we should be thankful that here is a guy who really understands the underlying issues effecting relations between the islamic and western nations. Hope he gets to lead the UK in the future!

Is there ANY Western Democracy that has a foreign policy of the type that MPAC UK suggest or desire in their article?

It seems to me that policy is the same and the only litmus test is what happens over Iran.

I don't think Milliband actually said anything. Just a mangle of words that mean what you want them to mean.

Milliband never said anything about the Israel raid in Syria and the government doesn't say anything about Israel activity against Gaza.

So, I don't see anything positive for the MPAC UK agenda.

JamalA

I suggest you search youtube for "Anti-Zionist Jewish Protestors" to get a difintion of Zionism from an Orthodox Jewish man who is then verbally abused by a Zionist.

The Zionist tactic for dealing with criticisms is well known. Depending on what type of person makes the comments Zionists refer to them with special tags, e.g.

Jewish Person - "Self Hating Jew"
Gentile - "Anti-Semite"
Muslim Person - "Extremist/Terrorist/Anti-Semite"

i.e. Zionists believe that Zionism is above all criticism, even if comments are made by Jewish commentators.... But let me guess, these aren't realy Jews in your eyes are they?

JamalA, your deliberate mis-spelling of Ahmedinejad's name is in itself a racist act as you're mocking Iranian culture, with that in mind it's quite rich to get on your high horse about anti-semitism.

And finally "JamalA" stop kidding yourself & the rest of us and come out from behind the cloak, if you truly believe in the conviction of your arguments then don't hide behind an alias like a coward and use your real name in debates.

Regards
Zubair

Hear hear...this little Zionist troll has brought nothing but shame and humiliation upon the Knesset and other Zio-Fascists around the world. Daniel Pipes has suddenly become aware that he's also another bed wetting coward who likes to twist words on his hate-site putting Goy against Goy (Christians and Muslims). Knowing true well that Jews suffered the most under Christianity -persecution, genocides, mass expulsions(even from Britain!)ethnic cleansing, holocausts etc than anyone else in history. What is his purpose? The world knows of this so-called 'Judeo-Christian' partnership quite well, of how much they trust each other and have been so kind in the not too distant past -Germany.(Christo-Nazis).
This is a well known game the Zionist likes to play. Call it REVENGE if you like, GOY against GOY is what they want - they got that in IRAQ (Wolfowitz) now they want that in IRAN.
The world is waking-up to this treacherous lot.
