Pretty soon we’ll be exchanging messages of Ramadan Kareem or Ramadan Mubarak, to congratulate and inform one another that this blessed month is upon us. Insh’Allah (God willing) we’ll offer our obligatory prayers, and spend more in the way of charity, and increase our good deeds, and offer extra acts of worship. During these days we’ll fine tune our empathy, from a physical and spiritual point of view with our fellow Muslims who are less fortunate than us. Almost 2 billion Muslims the world over, will rise to perform one of the five pillars of faith, to keep fast (Saum) from dawn to dusk. As a Sunnah, an act carried out by the Prophet Muhammed Sall? llahu alayhi wa sallam, we break our fast with the consumption of the date. This not only reminds us of the what our beloved Prophet and his companions, the Sahaba, Radhi Allahu Anhum would have done, but also teaches us of the scarcity of food in the Arabian peninsula 1400 years ago (it has also been scientifically proven that dates are a great source of energy, and do wonders to pep-up low blood sugar levels!) From the furthest corners of the world, Muslims will sit down at Dusk to break their fasts with the humble date. But are we aware of where these dates are grown? In recent years we have seen a growth of Israeli grown dates landing on the shelves of Muslim owned stores, purchased by Muslims….and consumed by Muslims. To some people this may be nothing to worry about, but think about this. Is there really any point in fasting if on the other hand you are providing the state of Israel with money which will inevitably kill and oppress your fellow innocent Muslims in Palestine? This is not a question of haraam or halaal but it’s a question of what is appropriate. Is it appropriate that we purchase products from the very people that stole our lands, slaughtered and forcibly removed our people from their lands, leaving the remainder that stayed virtually imprisoned? And if that wasn’t bad enough we buy their products and effectively contribute to maintaining the status quo in the occupied territories of Palestine. We cannot justify this dereliction of a simple duty by proclaiming “there was no other choice”. Israel is one of the smallest exporters of dates to the EU, with a market share in the region of 7% (www.fao.org), whilst Tunisia has a 50% share. It is prohibitively disliked (makruh tahriman) to trade with those at war with Muslims in any way that strengthens them in their war, as long as the enmity remains. As for that which does not aide them in their war with Muslims, it is not prohibitively disliked to trade with them. So how to identify Israeli dates? Here are photos of date packaging from the main Israeli date exporters to the UK so that you can be sure to boycott these. Remember if you have bought these dates you are well within your rights to get a refund explaining the ethical reasons for why you refuse to buy produced of Israel.

One of the largest Israeli date producers (www.hadiklaim.com) no longer publicises its Israeli origin on their products, through its various brands including “Jordan River” which is commonly sold in Tesco. You can also check the bar code to make sure your purchases aren't Israeli products:
Spending your hard earned money the right way is at the very least a highly recommended form of economic jihad. It is the best way, the way of caution. So instead of always reacting to a situation, let’s be pro-active for a change. Let this forthcoming month of Ramadan not be just about staying hungry but about showing a real sense of solidarity with Muslims across the world. Next time you're shopping in your local Muslim-owned store, educate them on this subject and lets put a stop to compromising the ideals of this holy month and Insh’Allah all our Ramadan experiences will fare better for it. Well done for highlighting this topic, espicially at this time of year....after all we will be held to account on what we have spent our money on, and the point you made about not trading with those who are at war with muslims is wholly justified. Keep up the good work & remain steadfast for the blessed month of Ramadan. Ramadan Kareem to everyone.

Muslims have a duty to avoid trading in these goods of oppression. It would be better to starve.

Why stop at dates in our boycott? Why not other Israeli products or products which were designed or manufatured by or in Israel?
For example, look for "Intel Inside" or other Intel stickers on your PC or laptop because Intel has a large design and research facility in Israel. The same with any Windows operating system because Microsoft Israel updated the original Windows to Windows ME and all following Winodws operating systems use core components and design from previous ones. Make sure your Internet provider doesn't use Cisco routers or equipment because much of it was designed in Cisco Israel. If we want to make a boycott then it has to be effective and not just small token gestures over dates or herbs (many of which come from Israel). May I also wish everyone a Happy Ramadan Mubarak and express:- Assalaamu'alaykum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh - May God's peace and blessings be upon you

Thank you for the information.
there is another way that Israel tries to get around their shameful identity (otherwise why hide?) What they do is use the European complicity - European countries do not mind extremism, fanaticism and terrorism when it is directed towards Ummah, they support and encourage it. A European country acts as a deposit for Israeli goods - Italy is a good example. They than package the shameful product and try to hide the origin of the country. I have complained so many times to the Supermarkets and they just shrug it off. other supermarket - one of this is the German discount chain, tends to write all the countries that one product comes from, example: Avocados Origin: South America, Spain, South Africa, israel and they mix the products Unless you are an expert on the product you have no idea where the product originates as they remove the labels -WHICH IS AGAINST THE EU REGULATIONS, you have to show the ORIGIN of the product I have complained to the South African, Spanish and Columbian embassies and have yet to receive their replies. They will have their products boycotted for their complicity & deafening silence. Another trick is that they write from South America but than one/few odd labels still left(I guess this is due to the supermarket employee's boredom than anything) else) show that the origin is Israel. Complaining to EU, let me enlighten you with brit ex-EU commissioner Chris Patten’s cowardice and EU jaundiced policy= hypocrisy While he was earning and I guess he is still earning €€€€€ for doing nothing (in the last month of his presidency the ex-President of EU mafioso Prodi created an ad hoc law that guarantees 55% of his salary for doing nothing!); No it will not work (why would applying the EU law not work in EU?) After leaving the lucrative EU salary this is what he had to say: The EU policy is biased and the Arabs do not insist forcefully (or words similar)

How silly is this? By boycotting Israeli dates you are making Palestinians who harvest them lose their jobs.

Africana, I admire your detective work and hope that you are avoiding those Israel foodstuffs.
But why not go deeper and start to boycott other Israeli goods? I know it says "Intel Inside" but they NEVER tell you from which country the programmers came from. Its the same with security software and other hardware. Cisco, Microsoft and Intel in Israel are bound to benefit from every PC and server sold. Could you ask your Internet provider to guarantee none of your web traffic or e-mail goes through any Cisco kit because some of teh firmware and hardware might have been developed by Cisco Israel. You seem to be the sort of person who has the persistence to track this down. Could you please share with us which computer equipment to boycott and how we can route our internet traffic and avoid Cisco and Windows Servers hosting websites. Thanks!

kader, why is Israel the enemy of Muslims?
I hope you didn't give money to Israel by using any computers or internet to make your point.

Companies such as Intel and Coca-Cola are multi-national, and each country's branch has their own accounts, budgets etc, thus pointless for people in the UK to boycott, as it wouldn't effect the Israeli economy.
However, boycotting actual produce of Israel DOES have an effect on their economy. The argument that the boycott will be detrimental to the Palestinians that work for the Israeli companies is weak; only a minority of Palestinians work in Israel, a far greater number are unemployed due to Israeli occupation. It is only when Palestine is liberated will they be free to create their own industries and economy. And lets not forget, the purpose of the boycott is to put pressure on the Israeli government to withdraw from illegally occupied Palestinian territory in the same way that a boycott of South Africa assisted in the fall of apartheid.

We are very close to entering into the best of months, Ramadan. It’s a
time where we come to experience what we crave the preceding eleven
months for, we truly feel like one united Ummah. From the furthest
corners of the world, Muslims will sit down at Dusk to break their
fasts with the humble date. But are we aware of where these dates are
grown?
