Action Alert! Innocent Muslims jailed for 2 months – will you act NOW to stop it? Print E-mail
Friday, 31 August 2007

actionalert.jpgThe Government’s latest proposal to extend the time police can detain suspects without charge has been shocking to civil liberties groups which value our rights and freedoms.

The introduction of ever more draconian “anti-terror” has taken place at an alarming rate. It is perhaps self-evident that those who have most significantly been at the sharp end of the post-7/7 political landscape have been Muslims. The shooting of an innocent Muslim man in the Forest Gate raid is only one example.

None of us would like our husbands, brothers, sisters or ourselves to be picked up by the police merely on grounds of suspicion, and detained for more than two months.

Action Alert:

Before Gordon Brown formally proposes a bill to Parliament doubling detention without charge to 56 days, MPs need to be lobbied to vote against this. Tony Blair’s attempt to extend detention without charge to 90 days was defeated by MPs.

Write to your local MP now to demand they oppose this attack on our human rights! Here are some points you can make in your own words:

· MPs should oppose any extension of detention without charge or trial.

· The Muslim community support the government in its aim of preventing terrorism. However, measures taken to combat terrorism must also ensure that justice and basic human rights are not trampled on.

· Detention without trial is counter-productive. It has been used before in Northern Ireland and did not lead to any improvement in security or reduction in terrorism. In fact, young republicans were radicalised by internment in the 1970’s.

· Any extension to the detention period is likely to be primarily used against Muslims. Figures released by the Home Office reveal the number of Asians (predominately Muslim) stopped and searched under the Terrorism Act 2000 increased by 300%. [Source: BBC News – 2 July 2004]

· The current 28 day limit of detention without trial is already the longest in Europe

· To surrender our democratic principles in this way would only hand victory to the real terrorists.

The slippery slope toward a Police State?

The UK police terrorism arrest statistics (excluding Northern Ireland) from 11 September 2001 – 31 March 2007 of the total 1228 arrested, 132 were charged with terrorism legislation offences and there have been only 41 Terrorism Act convictions since September 2001. Put another way, 96.6% of those arrested under the Terrorism Act, usually in the full glare of publicity, were innocent of any terrorist activity. The lives of these individuals, branded forever in the public eye as threats to society, have inevitably been ruined with the consequential adverse effect on their family and loved ones

Under the 14 day regime, no released terror suspect was later incriminated with new evidence. This means that the police have never practically required more than 14 days for their questioning & search for evidence. Extending the period to 56 days is not only unfair, but is also an unjust extension of the police’s powers, allowing the UK to be nothing greater than a ‘police state’. Since the Terrorist Act 2006, there have been several terrorist investigations where suspects have been arrested and held for more than 14 days without even being informed of the offences for which they were suspected.

The way the current detention has practically worked is:

1. Police questioning from days 1 -14 where the suspect is held in detention at the Police station
2. Days 14 – 28, where the suspect is transferred to prison & police questioning decreased dramatically to snails pace.

There are lots of risks associated with such lengthy detentions. Firstly, the suspect is exposed to the risk of making false confessions & is also placed under undue pressure by the prison environment. It is also extremely clear that institutional discrimination exists within the prison system. This has been evident with the deaths of Zahid Mubarek, in Feltham prison, and Shahid Azmi in Armley Jail.

Despite the apparent consultation, heavy-handed raids and arrests continue to be made. These failures have resulted in a demand from the street for action - immediate and effective, particularly in the light of more and more serious errors by the state in policing the Muslim community. The anger felt by those who have experienced or witnessed the endless stream of raids in Bradford, Leeds and London needs a voice in the democratic process.

Friendly advice: If Muslims want to stop being hounded, try and help stop the violence caused in the name of Islam and stop the excuses. An don't tell me Islam is not involved, it is involved, from 9/11 to London. Islam's fingerprints are all over such acts and denial does not help your cause at all. Try dealing with reality and stop the excuses and blaming others. If you do that maybe you will find people more friendly toward you. If you do nothing and continue on this path then expect more of the same.

Why do you say "Innocent Muslims held for 2 months".

There are NO innocent Muslims/Jews/Christians being held for two months.

Why "Muslims"? Isn't that an acknowledgement that Muslims are more likely to be involved in acts of terrorism in the UK?

You shoot yourselves in the foot because the Government was at pains to talk about Communities.

I support 56 days. NOT because it targets Muslims but because terrorism cases that may involve international elements, tracing mobile phone calls and examining hard-drives take longer.

If it was a bombing campaign by the IRA or BNP I am SURE you would support 56 days.

Its not the Government's fault that most recent terrorism in the UK has involved Muslims.

shlomo when the I.R.A bombed britain for nealry 30 years,we never had this kind of paranoia helped by the media and government,as someone who grew up with I.R.A terroism i can say with all honesty that i never heard the words christian terorist or catholic terroist in the papers or by the governments of the day.

the last time britain was effected by terrorism was about 7 or 8 months ago, when a terrorist who happened to be a christian let of about 8 or 9 bombs all over the U.K, there was no newspapers or tv media saying christian terrorist did this or that.

it is beyond doubt that all laws in regard to terrorism are being used to charge muslims,if white christian did exactly the same thing as a muslim, then 9 out of 10 times the muslim will be charged under terrorism laws and the christian will not.

the robert cottage case is a prime example.

so these laws are designed and will be used by and large against people who happen to be muslims,a law might be good in intention but who applies the law is where bigotry and racism plays its part.

MPAC, thank you for highlighting this.

This proposal along with most aspects of terrorism related laws are leading us towards a two tier system of laws in this country. One for muslims and one for the rest.

The pre-charge detention laws should actually be called internment. They will simply entrench the "Guantanamo" system of gulags in this country. But unlike, the brash Americans, the British govt will do it so "soberely and sincerely" that even most muslims will remain asleep before it is too late.

Rob,

Simple question.

Why does a law designed to improve the possibility of a conviction target Muslims?

When the IRA were active there were Internment camps.

Shall we remain at 28 days and have Internment then?

##it is beyond doubt that all laws in regard to terrorism are being used to charge muslims,if white christian did exactly the same thing as a muslim, then 9 out of 10 times the muslim will be charged under terrorism laws and the christian will not.##

First of all "white christians" are not bombing the UK in any campaign or by any political/religious motive.

If you are saying that 9 out of 10 Muslims would be charged then that is about right if one looks back over two years. That would be a low percentage in fact. You cannot deny the facts, arrests, charges and convictions.

The law applies to EVERYONE. If it catches more Muslims than "white christians" then that is not the fault of the law but the fault of the suspects.

It amuses me that non Muslims think and believe that these anti terror laws somehow dont have any effect on them, as if they are only used against Muslims.

Dont people such as shlomo and harry realise that they are as likely one of these days to find themselves 'violated' by the state?

What these people have to question is why do we need ever more draconian laws that curtail our civil liberties and rights, when the rest of the europe doesnt.

Now there are some very interesting laws that come into force in 2008 that further restrict our civil liberties, consider this with claims of 'anarchy' , gun crime, and the supposed muslim threat maybe shlomo and harry will regret their eagerness to give the state more power than it deserves to have

Wendy,

The chance that I would be under threat of arrest for terrorism related offences are zero.

You are correct that the laws apply to ALL and do NOT target Muslims.

I'm afraid that profiling exists no matter how much anyone will deny it.

It is obvious that profiling MUST exist in crime detection. When there is an incident which reaches the news and they say the police are looking for suspects it is a waste of time NOT to say "Black", "White" or "Asian appearance" etc. There is no point in saying "Police are looking for men aged 17-21 with dark hair".

shlomo as always you suffer from selective memory when it comes to muslims or is your hatred for muslims so extreme that it blinds you to reality.

the last time we had a terror attack in the U.K,which was succesful it was a white christian who carried out the terrorism and it was political terror but hey guess what he was not charged with terrorism.

for the time being the label terrorist is reserved for only one section of the community.

You are plain wrong. The last terror attack was in Glasgow, following London (Mayfair)

Why do you try and fool everyone by using the word "succesful" unless you secretly admire the police for busting so many plots and being grateful for luck and incompetence on the part of the terrorists.

Its misleading statements like yours that do a disservice to debate.

Can MPAC UK provide the names of the "Innocent Muslims jailed for two months" indicated by the headline.

I think this matter should be raised via an MP.
