When my electricity returned at around 3am yesterday, I turned on the BBC World Service television. There were a series of powerful explosions which shook the house - just as they vibrated across all of Beirut - as the latest Israeli air raids blasted over the city. And then up came the World Service headline: "Terror Plot". Terror what, I asked myself? And there was my favorite cop, Paul Stephenson, explaining how my favorite police force - the ones who bravely executed an innocent young Brazilian on the Tube. | | Comments closed |

You can say what you like in the US, just as long as you don't ask awkward questions about America's role in the Middle East.
It used to be said that academic rows were vicious because the stakes were so small. That's no longer true in America, where a battle is underway on campuses over what can be said about the Middle East and US foreign policy.

The British government’s support for Israel is putting British lives at risk. This is an undeniable fact - however much Blair and his Zionist friends protest otherwise. Rather than denying the facts, let’s have an open debate: is this foreign policy worth sacrificing British lives for? But as soon as we ask these questions we’re accused of "appeasing terrorism", or even being "terrorist sympathisers"… hang on - what kind of defenders of freedom and democracy want us to stop asking questions and shut down open debate?

Four weeks on and the UN and international community are still wavering over a resolution. How many more innocent lives must be lost before the world will take a stand against the state terrorism of Israel? Why hasn’t Tony Blair demanded an immediate ceasefire?

"Think not I have come to send peace on earth, I came not to send peace but a sword" Does that sound violent? Does that sound out of Context? Oh that's not from the Quran but from the Bible, Mathew 10.34.

British Muslim groups have written to the Prime Minister calling for "urgent" changes to UK foreign policy. In an open letter they say British policy is putting civilians at increased risk in the UK and abroad. The letter, to appear in press adverts, also points to the "debacle" of Iraq and the failure to secure an immediate end to attacks in the Middle East.

The Bush administration scored a major victory Thursday in its efforts to criminally prosecute journalists and others involved in the leaking and reporting of classified information. A federal district court in Virginia refused to dismiss a criminal indictment brought by the Bush Justice Department under the Espionage Act of 1917 against two former employees of the American-Israeli Political Action Committee (AIPAC), who are alleged to have received classified information from a former Bush defense department official, and then passed it on to a journalist and an Israeli diplomat.

Kofi Annan today highlighted the plight of the people of Gaza requesting that the international community should not be distracted from the situation in Gaza. His spokesman described the killing of civilians and particularly children by Israel – which has been taking place on a day to day basis, as “utterly unjustifiable.” Only today reports emerged of the death of a three year old girl along with two other fighters when Isreal launched rockets at a Citrus Grove in Gaza City.

While Arabs and Muslims have an obligation to become empowered, to strengthen the alternatives to such violence, Americans, Israelis and Britons would be well-advised to push for humane and fair foreign policies. You can't oppress your cake and eat it too. In other words, you want cheap oil, control of the Middle East and to hold on to stolen land. Fine. You can't expect your victims and their allies to like you, too.
